River Ranger Data
Once upon a time in Central Texas a small band of concerned citizens formed the San Marcos River Rangers. Since 1995 this volunteer group has grown; some of the names have changed but the mission to be the "eyes of the river" has remained the common thread to hold the group together. These dedicated Rangers collect water quality data from the headwaters of the San Marcos River at Aquarena Springs to Luling. See Map
As a partner, the San Marcos River Foundation has been providing valuable support to the River Rangers, which is vital to the group's continued success.

Mission Statement

To provide the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality ( TCEQ), formerly(TNRCC) with level 1 water quality data for the San Marcos River and to promote the river's social value through community outreach and educational programs.

The San Marcos River Rangers(SMRR) is part of Texas Watch, the statewide volunteer environmental monitoring program. As of September 1999 this program relocated from TCEQ the state agency in Austin, to the Geography Department at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.

For the third consecutive year TNRCC has recognized the SMRR at the 1997,1998, and 1999 Meeting of the Monitors Awards Presentations. In 2001 the River Rangers again received an award as Outstanding Group. To maintain the outstanding level of leadership, training, and quality data, the SMRR must continue to dedicate its collective energy in protecting the San Marcos River.
