Monitoring Tips
Alert! If you witness any illegal dumping into the San Marcos River or any of its tributaries including storm drains, please report it to the city's Environmental Health Div. 393-8440 or the police (911). Outside of the city limits, call Kip Portis of Texas Parks & Wildlife 353-3474 or the 24 hr hotline (512)389-4848. Record the time, date, location & details about the incident. You may be contacted to be a witness if the incident is brought to trial.
Filling out the Texas Watch Data FormPlease leave completed forms with your kit captain.
Taking time to fill out the data form correctly is just as important as taking time to go out to monitor your sites.
Conductivity Calibration Time is always before Sample Time.A good way to remember is to know that your conductivity meter is ready before you grab your water sample. New conductivity meters are waterproof and easier to calibrate. The conductivity standard will not be set at 790, but around 600, which is closer to expected results from the river. Please check the standard container for the known value before calibrating.
Always check expiration dates of all the reagents in your kit before you take it to your site.
Write your kit # at the top of the data form. If there are any problems with the kit, they are easier to track.
If your Secchi disk refuses to sink, mark an asterisk by the Transparency and Total Depth boxes and write a brief note in the Comments that the current is too strong.
If it rains every day of your scheduled weekend and the river is flooding or high, you can still turn in a data form. Just mark in the first box of the Field Observations with a 4 ( flood) or 5 ( high). Be sure to sign your form and indicate your time spent and mileage.Remember, safety first!
Your health and safety is more important than gathering data.

Please use the plastic rinse bottles with distilled water to help keep the sample containers in the kits clean. After testing, rinse the DO bottles, titration vial( not the titrator), the pH test tube, and (when applicable) the test tubes from the nitrate and phosphate kits. This makes it easier for the next person to use the kit, insures better quality data, and extends the life of the kit.
Remember to take a waste container with you. A wide mouth plastic jar with a lid is perfect. Rags or paper towels are great for wiping down the containers and inside the kit. Allow the Secchi rope to dry before placing it back into the kit.
Hope these tips are helpful to your monitoring experience.

Take a friend along and enjoy the river.
