Snow Crash
Neal Stephenson

Every now and then a book comes along that makes me glad I read Science Fiction. In this genre, there's so much room for an author with real imagination to flex his muscles and show us the future. Neal Stephenson has imagination, and his fictional future world is both surreal and startlingly probable.

Snow Crash is also a helluva lot of fun. Not only is the early 21st century vividly realized, but the characters are realistic and engaging, and the story is both a breakneck adventure and a stimulating journey of the mind. Stephenson's storytelling style is irresistible; by using the present tense he puts the reader right there, right now, in the buzzing, pulsing, high-speed, desolate world of fractured government and franchise communities, and he does it with tongue-in-cheek humor.

Add to that an intriguingly advanced VR version of the internet and gadgets that would make James Bond drool, and you've got a story that just won't quit.

Snow Crash is best read, if you'll pardon the expression, cold. I was very glad I hadn't read the back cover or any reviews until after I'd read the first chapter. I liked getting to know the protagonists -- and the future society -- as the story unfolded. I recommend you try that, too.

This was my first experience with Stephenson but it certainly won't be my last. His latest book is called The Diamond Age and is right at the top of my shopping list. His earlier work Zodiac: The Eco-Thriller also looks intriguing.

Translating this concept into English
is like translating "fuckface" into Nipponese,
but it might translate into "emotional intensity" in football lingo.
